I walked into a brightly lit studio tucked away on a side street in Flatiron on a rainy Tuesday afternoon. Sundays Nail Studio is a new 10-free, non-toxic, vegan nail salon that is taking the beauty industry by storm, or should I say OM, with their innovative 2-in-1 meditation manicure. As a lover of both, I couldn’t resist!
A beaming associate promptly greeted me and asked me to pick out a color as usual and then kindly offered me a drink. I gazed around the studio, sipping my water with fresh lemon, taking in the minimal aesthetic with graphic pops of black, white and millennial pink. The space was a lot smaller than what I expected, however this is New York City, which means, yes, there is a spiral staircase that leads up to a chic loft as well.
My jacket was swiftly grabbed and placed in coat check as I was guided to a corner seat at a long communal table of nail estheticians painting away like Picasso. A pair of oversized rose gold headphones and an iPhone were placed beside me. The esthetician brought over a new package of utensils (SO important for sanitation reasons. I legit won’t go anywhere that doesn’t do this now) and a bowl of soapy water. I was anxious to put on the headphones to get started, but was stopped and reassured that I would begin after the technician filed my nails. The time came and I slipped into a blissful, cognitive state, completely relaxed as my hands were pampered and a refreshing lavender spritz enveloped my body.
Sundays uses the INSCAPE app, which I highly recommend. I’ve used Headspace many times and never was too fond of the voice and rhythm of the guided meditation. For some reason, I felt a deeper connection with the softer, female voice. The 10 minute mind vacation proceeded and I breathed deeply as my nails were buffed and painted to precision, but not once was I distracted. I slowly peeled my eye lids open when the meditation ended, wishing it lasted longer – the technician was about 3/4 through my manicure. I calmly sat with a loose gaze staring out the window at the hustle and bustle of the city.
It was incredibly satisfying and fulfilling knowing that I had accomplished two things in one sitting – a very common city dweller opinion. After my mani, I thought I would extend my stay ten minutes longer (the extra time I would have taken to meditate later) in the library loft upstairs. It’s a work-in-progress, but still embodied the minimal chic aesthetic with an ever-growing bookshelf. As an extension of their meditation manicures, they offer weekly morning and evening meditation sessions. In the loft, I had the opportunity to sit down with one of the divine associates of Sundays, Stephanie.
Stephanie explained that the Sundays philosophy provides the highest quality and safest products for their clients and salon employees. Their product palette is a rainbow-hue collection of 10-free, nontoxic, cruelty-free and vegan polishes. One thing that stood out to me about Sundays was there incorporation of gel/shellac services – a big no-no for a lot of non-toxic, vegan salons. Poised, Stephanie confidently explained that there are all shades of natural beauty enthusiasts and Sundays wanted to be able to cater to the entire market. If you are a loyal Boundless Fashion reader, you know that I’m against gel for multiple reasons. However, I was reassured that Sundays utilizes an LED light to cure the nails as opposed to the UV lamp and the gel is 7-free NCLA – a polish that also protects the natural nail as it is a quick and easy soak-off gel polish. #WINNING.
After just over an hour spent at Sundays, I walked out feeling clear-headed, confident and composed with a fresh lilac mani. Friends, if you have trouble getting over the mid-week hump or need some solid R&R, check out Sundays – your mind and body will thank you!
