My journey with coffee has been quite the roller coaster. From drinking several cups a day to maybe once a week during cancer treatment and then hopping back on the bean bandwagon to help bolster my day-to-day energy after I was cancer-free and healed. Despite my love for coffee, I’ve recently had the conscious realization that I may be loving coffee a little too much lately. That’s why I was thrilled when Taryn Toomey’s team behind The Class reached out about their latest launch — The Cleanse by Taryn Toomey, a 10-day seasonal cleanse program that not only helps you cut caffeine, but also sugar and animal products.
I ended up proceeding with a derivative of the cleanse and incorporating matcha into my routine instead of coffee.
After the shock of not having my morning sip settled, I was pleasantly surprised at how stable my energy was throughout the day.
Other positive side effects from going coffee free included:
I felt…
- more grounded
- more responsive
- more present
- more clearheaded
- more hydrated
- less reactive
- less tense
- less tired (weird right?)
And the negative side effects included:
- The headaches
- The routine cravings
- … The fact that I truly can’t think of any other is telling.
Although the positive outweigh the negative here, I simply felt like I was missing something special from my day — it truly was a ritual that I really loved and filled not only my cup, but my soul. That’s why I still drink coffee mindfully today. However, I consider myself a conscious coffee drinker, purposefully indulging (or trying to) with intention — say drinking it before I head to a hard workout class or at the beginning of a long work day. However, brunch with friends or just hanging out — a matcha or tea will do. These days I try to take 1-2 days off the bean a week.
Now, onto some coffee alternatives.
Here are some of my favorite high-vibe coffee alternatives that are extremely satisfying and satiating:
